Forward Pinellas, a transportation advocacy group, crunched some numbers late last year and found out that 77 car crashes happen on average in Pinellas County EVERY DAY.

What we find even crazier, is that this average has been consistent over the LAST FIVE YEARS according to Forward Pinellas. And in 2017, the average number was even higher at 83 crashes a day. Why is this?

Traffic experts believe that the leading causes to these crashes are:

1. Pedestrians and drivers disobeying traffic laws
2. Distracted driving habits
3. A spike in the number of vehicles and drivers on the road due to tourism or the demand to live in the Tampa Bay Area.

It makes sense that that the increasing number of people traveling to Tampa Bay to live here or to vacation makes for a great recipe for Tampa Bay car accidents.

Pinellas County Actions to Make Driving On Our Roads Safer

According to ABC Action News, Pinellas County is working on a few solutions to bring this soaring average down. They include:

1. Building more overpasses 
2. Widening roads
3. Adding more bike lanes and crosswalks

Ultimately, staying vigilant is the only thing in our control that we can do to help prevent us from being a statistic.
